THE THRASHER (1996)

Gerry Gibbs Sextet – Featuring Ravi Coltrane

After 18 different “One Week Engagements” from 2002-2005 at the World Famous Village Gate in NYC, Gerry was signed to his first record deal with Quincy Jones and his Qwest/Warner Bros label. Legendary drummer and producer Stix Hooper (known as one of the founding members of the Jazz Crusaders) caught the band live and and brought Gerry to Quincy. Stix stayed on as producer for the CD.

After 4 nights live in concert in Los Angeles playing to sold out crowds, the band with one days rest went straight into the studio for 2 days to record this CD. All takes except for two were first takers. This documentation is exactly what this band did live in concert. All but 3 standards recorded on this were Gerry Gibbs originals. All songs were arranged by Gibbs. Listen to the tight flawless playing of original “Thrasher” band mates Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, Violinist Mark Feldman, Vibraphonist Joe Locke, Pianist Billy Childs, Pianist Uri Caine, and Bassist Darek Oles.
